Many young curators, writers, and contemporary art professionals from all over the world have applied for THE AUTUMN SCHOOL OF CURATING, 2ND EDITION NEW NOW (ONLINE). The Open Call phase took place between 1-31 October 2020 and addressed emerging professionals in curatorship and art writing with at least 3 years of experience in the field. The admissions committee made the selection based on the narrative biographies and the applicants’ motivational letters. We have received numerous outstanding applications out of which the best 25 were selected. We are convinced there will be many future opportunities for us to collaborate with everyone who expressed their interest in the program.

The Curatorial School will unfold through a genuinely international dialogue with participants from Romania, Germany, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Sweden, Bangladesh, Palestine, Serbia, India, Great Britain. At the same time, some of them feel that the term “world citizens” suits their heritage better. From different age groups and professional interests, they will bring to the table a unique range of points of view – many of them have developed a hybrid career, devoting to and mixing different fields of interest, such as curatorial studies, contemporary art theory and writing, visual arts, cultural management, performance, set design, graphic design, filmmaking, production, entrepreneurship and many more.

The Autumn School of Curating was planned to take place in Romania, just like the first edition of the program, but the world-wide pandemic faced us with the challenge of adapting and thinking of a virtual solution. In the end, this offered us an opportunity for an international scale and scope, as Adrian Notz, the course leader of the Curatorial School, stated in his manifesto-like message for the participants. He reminds us that, most importantly, the main resource is that we have ourselves:

“(…) We all have our networks, communities, social media channels, email lists, maybe websites etc.
We have certain tools we can work with already.
More importantly, we all have our skills, experience, knowledge and passion.
All of you are dealing with certain crucial topics of today.
Some of you are curious, some of you are furious.
Some have been fighting for rights, some have been investigating topics.
Some have a specific focus, some a broad perspective.
Or, for all of the above, you have both at the same time.
We are an international group with a lot of different places of origin, living and working. An international group dealing with
a lot of different contexts.

It is important to get to know each other!
We might become a group, the «NEW NOW» group.”

We are excited to witness this potential emerging of the «NEW NOW» group. 🙂 One might ask, what’s next for the selected participants and for the wide public? For them, the program will mean an engaging ten-day online seminar led by curator Adrian Notz, through which they will gain access to an international platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and learning. Notz will be accompanied by ahead of the curve artists and curators, who are guest speakers of the Curatorial School: Carlos Amorales (MX), Zheng Bo (CN), Tara Lasrado (AU/ IN/ CH), Ibrahim Nehme (LB), Joanna Warsza (PL/ DE), Heba Y Amin (AE). Over the course of ten days, the participants will take part in conversations with the speakers, who will offer insight on past and present best practices and share methods of presenting and communicating ideas and research topics. Together they will search for possible solutions to problems the art world is facing today, hoping to answer a simple yet urgent question: Where and how can we / art engage?

The series of public talks delivered by the School’s guest speakers will be streamed live on our Facebook Event page. Each talk will give us the opportunity to tackle interesting topics, such as “The Happy Uselessness of the Artist”, ‘The Possibility of Possibility’ or “landscapes of (un)learning – on ecology, care and community”. We invite you to take a look at the full schedule of the Curatorial School, which will soon be published here and to join us!
